Sew Family Jammies 2019
I was so excited to participate in making pajamas for my family again but this time I included just the girls! I like to do special things for my little girl like that so she can feel like she is the only one in the world for just a moment without the little brothers invading her space ha!
Pattern choice: I have been eyeing this pattern ever since it came out and it seems so versatile with so many color blocking options! It is the Violette Fields Threads Brianna Pajamas pattern! There is a doll, child, tween, and adult version! I purchased the child and adult pattern and went to work! The pattern is very beginner friendly and you can use your serger or sewing machine for the whole project!
Fabric Choice: I decided to color block the pattern mostly because I didn’t have enough fabric to use all the same! I searched my stash and went to work right away! I decided on stripes for the neckband, waistband, wrist and ankle bands! It was a nice contrast for the pajamas. I also didn’t have enough fabric to complete the pants for my little girls so I frantically found some light pink jersey to make my daughters pants! I have to say the main fabric is so lovely and a very stable cotton jersey. Art Gallery fabric is so lovely and never ever disappoints. It is very easy to sew with and is great for a beginner.
For the stripes, I made sure to cut all pieces on one layer. It is better to make sure the stripes are not crooked and line up well with the pattern piece!
Modifications:
For my little girl, I had to modify the pattern and grade to different sizes! She is very tall and thin and needs the height and length but not the width. By looking at her measurements and including a little extra, I decided on a size 6 for her waist and legs as well as her wrists, and then a 9/10 for her shoulders and length of her arms and legs! By using layers, I can print the 2 sizes I need and then connect and grade the seams where it would like it to be done. Let me show you here how I lengthened the pants to be the length of the size 9/10 plus 2 inches! She is taller than the height for 9/10!
You can also see how I made the waist a size 6 but I extended up to the height of the 9/10 at the inseam and crotch height.
I also graded in at the waist to the size 6 for the bodice but kept the 9/10 for the shoulders and chest.
I graded the sleeves in to reach the width of size 6 at the wrist as well. I used the size 6 cuff size for the wrist and ankles but the length of the 9/10!! I think you are all starting to get the gist of all of this! All you need to make sure of is that all seams will match and the lengths and widths will fit together.
Construction:
I didn’t have any trouble putting the pattern together and used my serger for the whole thing except for hemming! It worked really well and I had no problems!
Sizing:
The modifications I made for my daughter worked perfectly! I made a straight size small and had to decrease the waist elastic just a tad for myself. Other than that, it fit very well!
Styling: I think this would be perfect for any time of year in this fabric and if you want to wear it in the summer it is still very breathable! It depends on how cold your house is! Also, for my daughter, this is even a cute shirt to wear out of the house! She loves it! You can pair it with a matching eye mask as well to reach ultimate cuteness for bedtime!
We so enjoyed wearing these together and I hope you leaned something from the blog post! I think the pattern is very easy and beginner friendly and the fabric is very very nice to work with! Enjoy making jammies for you and your loved ones!
